Your Summer Planning Essentials TeacherVision Advisory Board Member, Jeanne, outlines summer planning essentials, and shares her tips for what you need to start planning over the summer, and what can wait until school starts. by Jeanne Wolz So. You’re hired. You know what content(s) and grade level(s) you’re teaching, and all you want to do is get started with planning. But what should you start with? And how much should you do before meeting with colleagues or meeting your kids? You are right to be wary of planning too much before getting acquainted with your kids, and especially right if you haven’t had a chance to talk to anyone about curriculum or guidelines you’ll be expected to follow. Let’s talk about what is smart to start planning over the summer--and what is smarter to wait on. First, Do Your Homework Talk to your principal and ask what curriculum and/or standards you’ll be expected to follow, as well as any behavior or discipline policies you’ll be expected to enforce. While they’ll likely have information on discipline, they may not have detailed information on curriculum, in which case ask for contact information of a department chair or teacher counterpart that you can ask. The last thing you want to do is write your curriculum this summer only to find out you have to throw it all out.   Develop Your Classroom Management Plan While you’re waiting for answers, focus on planning your classroom management plan. In the summer before your first year, classroom management is incredibly important.  It’s the key to keeping your sanity intact while having the freedom to do all the awesome, life-changing lessons you’ve been dreaming about this year. And it will save you a lot of stress down the road.   Your classroom management plan should have plans for things like procedures (How should students sharpen their pencil? Ask to go to the bathroom? Turn in their homework?), routines (what will happen in a typical class period?), discipline plan (what are the non-negotiable rules? What happens if kids break them?), policies (do you accept late work? What about tardies?), your family communication systems (how will you contact home, and how often?), and rewards and incentives (how will you celebrate and reward awesome work?). Feeling lost? You will also find helpful tips and strategies in our e-book, 5 Tips To Master Classroom Management.   Plan your Year Overview While it’s not very useful to plan your entire year day-by-day before meeting and getting to know your students (thank goodness because how overwhelming would that be?), having a solid curriculum overview for your year can save you a lot of head-aches down the road. Many districts provide this for you, but if they don’t, they aren’t too complicated to put together: Just sit down, pull out your school calendar and any other information you have about what you’re expected to teach.   Count the days/weeks you’ll have students during the year.   Then list out all of your standards or learning objectives in a spreadsheet. Start brainstorming units that can cover those standards along the top.   Then, mark which standards you’ll cover in each unit.   Estimate the number of weeks you’ll need for each unit Cross-check that with the days you’ll have students ...and voila, you have a year overview! Plan your First Two Weeks After you’ve established what your first unit will be as well as your classroom management plan, you’ve got yourself a list of things to teach during your first two weeks. While I don’t recommend planning anything in detail much farther out than two weeks, having two weeks of plans to help you get to know your students, teach your classroom management plan, and pre-assess their skills will be very useful.   Plan your Classroomâ€"and Keep it Simple I’m here to let you off the hook. Here’s the deal: your students kids are going to love you and learn a ton this year because of you and your incredible lesson plans, not because of your polka-dot classroom theme. Besides, wouldn’t it be awesome to have them help you design and decorate your classroom over the first couple weeks? And it’s a great way to get to know your students. So while all of those Pinterest-perfect classroom set-ups are tempting, let them go this year--especially if you’re in your first few years. Concentrate on thinking about where students will sit, how they’ll move about the room, how your paper flow will work, and what you need on your walls to have a functional classroom, as well as finding killer deals on school supplies (you will literally never have enough pencils for the rest of your life). Leave the rest of the classroom decorating for students to make their own. And that’s it! That’s what I recommend planning before you begin. The more you can make 4 things solid, the stronger your foundation will be for an amazing year this year. Try your best to let go of the rest--you’ll have plenty of time this year to continue to make your classroom your own. For now, focus on the most important, and give yourself plenty of rest. German for Beginners Learning Tips

Here are some study tips and practical advice to help make your learning of German more effective: Use Your First Language to Learn the Second German and English are both Germanic languages with a lot of Latin and Greek thrown in. There are many cognates, words that are similar in both languages. Examples include: der Garten (garden), das Haus (house), schwimmen (swim), singen (sing), braun (brown), and ist (is). But also watch out for false friends — words that appear to be something theyre not. The German word bald (soon) has nothing to do with hair! Avoid Language Interference Learning a second language is similar in some ways to learning your first, but there is one big difference. When learning a second language (German), you have interference from the first (English or whatever). Your brain wants to fall back on the English way of doing things, so you have to fight that tendency. Learn Nouns With Their Genders German, like most languages other than English, is a language of gender. As you learn each new German noun, learn its gender at the same time. Not knowing whether a word is der (masc.), die (fem.) or das (neut.) can confuse listeners and makes you sound ignorant and illiterate in German. That can be avoided by learning das Haus rather than just Haus for house/building, for example. Stop Translating Translation should only be a temporary crutch! Stop thinking in English and trying to do things the â€Å"English† way! As your vocabulary grows, get away from translating and start thinking in German and German phrases. Remember: German-speakers dont have to translate when they speak. Neither should you! Learning a New Language Is Learning to Think in a New Way Das Erlernen einer neuen Sprache ist das Erlernen einer neuen Denkweise. - Hyde Flippo Get a Good German-English Dictionary You need an adequate (minimum 40,000 entries) dictionary and you need to learn how to use it! A dictionary can be dangerous in the wrong hands. Try not to think too literally and dont just accept the first translation you see. Just as in English, most words can mean more than one thing. Consider the word â€Å"fix† in English as one good example: â€Å"fix a sandwich† is a different meaning than â€Å"fix the car† or â€Å"hes in a fine fix.† Learning a New Language Takes Time Learning German — or any other language — requires a long period of sustained exposure to German. You didnt learn your first language in a few months, so dont think a second one will come any faster. Even a baby does a lot of listening before talking. Dont get discouraged if the going seems slow. And use all the resources at your disposal for reading, listening, writing, and speaking. The United States is the only country where people believe you can learn a foreign language in two school years. - Hyde Flippo Passive Skills Come First A period of listening and reading is important before you can expect to use the active skills of speaking and writing. Again, your first language was the same way. Babies dont start talking until theyve done a lot of listening. Be Consistent and Study/Practice on a Regular Basis Unfortunately, language is NOT like riding a bicycle. Its more like learning to play a musical instrument. You DO forget how to do it if you get away from it too long! Language Is More Complex Than We Realize Thats one reason  computers are such lousy translators. Dont worry about all the details all the time, but be aware that language is much more than just stringing a bunch of words together. There are subtle things we do with  language  that even linguists have difficulty explaining. Thats why I say, Learning a new language is learning to think in a new way. Sprachgefà ¼hl You have to develop a feeling for the language to master German or any language. The more you get into German, the more this hard-to-describe  Sprachgefà ¼hl  should develop. Its the opposite of a rote, mechanical, programmed approach. It means getting into the languages sound and feel. There Is No Right Way German has its own way of defining words (vocabulary), saying words (pronunciation), and putting words together (grammar). Learn to be flexible, to mimic the language, and to accept  Deutsch  the way it is. German may do things differently from your point of view, but it isnt a matter of right or wrong, good or bad. Learning a new language is learning to think in a new way! You dont really know a language until you can think (and dream) in that language. Dangerous! - Gefà ¤hrlich! Some things to avoid: Avoid the most common beginners mistakes.  Dont be overly ambitious. Set realistic goals and take things one step at a time. Our lessons are designed that way.Dont try to pretend you are a native speaker of German (Muttersprachler) when you arent. That means avoiding jokes, swearing and other linguistic minefields that can make you sound and look foolish.One more time: Stop translating! It gets in the way of real communication and should be left to skilled professionals.Also one more time: A dictionary is dangerous! Verify meanings by also looking up the word or expression in the opposite language direction. Vietnam War Vietnam War Before the U.S. went to Vietnam, twelve years before the war started, the French were there, it was their colony. The French controlled the country. Northern Vietnam wanted to make their nation Communist as China was probably their influence. The people of southern Vietnam wanted the opposite. It was a typical tropical climate in Vietnam. South Vietnam urgently asked for immediate and extensive help from the United States. As the struggle progressed the U.S. Government made a decision to send troops to South Vietnam. This was how they ended up fighting beside the U.S. military. Fighting aircraft and army helicopters flew to South Vietnam. (They flew from U.S. aircraft in the South China Sea. Their major objectives were to keep peace before war erupted. However, keeping the peace did not work. The battle began, which meant time for three thousand more troops, more accurate machinery and high radio frequency links. "The word Vietnam has evoked powerful and often contradictory images, and the lessons drawn have dictated answers to the most pressing questions." The Vietnam War occurred roughly thirty-five years ago. When researching the Vietnam War, one may expect some confusion. To this day, the United States remains confused about the war and exactly how it ended. We, as a society and economy, lost thousands of soldiers and billions of dollars. However, when viewing the bigger picture, a small outcome of the whole thing. The United States also gave up a gigantic victory. The Northern Vietnamese Army won the war. Not only was it a horrible scene but the invasion capped the nation's eyes and hearts in 1968. During the fight, the United States military did not know how the South Vietnamese were going to react to the bombings. On a regular day in Vietnam, you could hear the sounds of Vietnamese voices in the cool air, everyone was always busy and life seemed so smooth. If it weren't for the cheap radios, the workers outside would go nuts, every second you would hear, "boom, boom, boom!" Bombings began in the morning and would not stop, sometimes until five o'clock the next morning. The cities were distracted and Vietnamese people lived like heathens during the war. In city doorways, there were already homeless refugees lying around. Army Panchos were made so they could sleep comfortably on the hard ground. Most of the time, families had lost complete protection of other family members. Mothers tried their best to huddle their children and make sure the shelter was good and safe. Many children relieved their guardians and went into gutters around the city. Down inside of the gutter was nothing but wild dogs fighting rats over rotten garbage from the sewage. Most Vietnamese people survived without food and only a little water. The South Vietnamese were with the United States military and they made an effort to get food and water from us. Overall, at the end of this tragedy, over a million troops and innocent people were dead. First of all, what were we in war for? The United States of America always goes to another country to either help someone with financial problems or to negotiate something with other governments. We made a big mistake and I hope they have learned from it back in Washington D.C. One of the most terrible moments that happened during the war was when the U.S military came out with the technology to sniff out the human smell. They would put it on the front of helicopters and do sweeps over the jungles. If they got any human readings, they would call in the attack bombers, which would drop napalm (Jelly Gas), for total destruction. This shows the tactics used by the US. The U.S. was just bombing blind. We are known for taking over land during wars. In the Vietnam War, we didn't want any part of it at all. Almost certainly, for many years human beings have overlooked the major possibility of America being similar to Africa. However, the medicine man, who was responsible for divination and curing the sick, played a pivotal role in these small communities. Diet consisted of variety of animals including shellfish and rhinos. They did not use metal; their weapons were made from wood, bones and stone. The women collected berries, leaves, bulbs and the roots of various plants. However, about 2000 years ago the discovery of livestock from the North and its impact on the hunter-gatherers lifestyle created friction between them and the pastoralists, mainly because the San saw the pastoralists as being invasive to their territory, and their animals as being invasive of their territorys natural resources . In this article, I'll give you the ingredients you need for a solid AP Biology syllabus, including all the concepts and curricular requirements of the course. I'll also provide a sample syllabus so you can get an idea of what a syllabus for this class might look like (if you're a student) or how you might structure your version of AP Biology (if you're a teacher). Finally, the end of this article is devoted to a few quick tips for teachers and students on how to successfully teach and learn the material. What Does the AP Biology Course Cover? The curriculum framework of AP Biology was revamped in 2012 and is now organized around four Big Ideas, which are overarching themes that connect the concepts you’ll learn in the course. Within each Big Idea are several â€Å"Enduring Understandings† that students are expected to develop by taking the course.These are slightly narrower themes thatcan be broken down even further into smaller parts that are aligned with specific facts about biological functions. The Four Big Ideas of AP Biology Big Idea #1: The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life. Enduring Understanding 1.1: Change in the genetic makeup of a population over time is evolution. EU 1.2: Organisms are linked by lines of descent from common ancestry. EU 1.3: Life continues to evolve within a changing environment. EU 1.4: The origin of living systems is explained by natural processes. EU 2.2: Growth, reproduction and dynamic homeostasis require that cells maintain internal environments that are different from their external environments. EU 3.2: Expression of genetic information involves cellular and molecular mechanisms. EU 3.3: The processing of genetic information is imperfect and is a source of genetic variation. EU 3.4: Cells communicate by generating, transmitting and receiving chemical signals. EU 3.5: Transmission of information results in changes within and between biological systems. Labs for Big Idea 3: Cell Division: Mitosis and Meiosis Biotechnology: Bacterial Transformation Biotechnology: Restriction Enzyme Analysis of DNA Big Idea #4: Biological systems interact, and these systems and their interactions possess complex properties EU 4.1: Interactions within biological systems lead to complex properties. EU 4.2: Competition and cooperation are important aspects of biological systems. EU 4.3: Naturally occurring diversity among and between components within biological systems affects interactions with the environment. Labs for Big Idea 4: Energy Dynamics Transpiration Fruit Fly Behavior Enzyme Activity Cooperation is always happening in biological systems! This is an approximation of what the inside of a cell looks like at any given time. The Seven Scientific Practices of AP Biology #1:The student can use representations and models to communicate scientific phenomena and solve scientific problems. #2: The student can use mathematics appropriately. #3:The student can engage in scientific questioning to extend thinking or to guide investigations within the context of the AP course. #4: The student can plan and implement data collection strategies in relation to a particular scientific question. (Note: Data can be collected from many different sources, e.g., investigations, scientific observations, the findings of others, historic reconstruction and/or archived data.) #5: The student can perform data analysis and evaluation of evidence. #6: The student can work with scientific explanations and theories. #7: The student is able to connect and relate knowledge across various scales, concepts and representations in and across domains. The Curricular Requirements of AP Biology Here's a list of the requirements that an AP Biology course must fulfill to be considered an appropriate and thorough survey of the material: The course must use a college-level biology textbook published within the last ten years. Students must connect the Enduring Understandings of each Big Idea to at least one other Big Idea (for example, connect the evolutionary concepts in Big Idea 1 to the idea presented under Big Idea 3 that genetic information is sometimes processed imperfectly, and this leads to variation). Students should be assigned projects and activities outside of labs to meet the learning objectives for each Big Idea (for example, students might do an activity where they create a model of the cell cycle and give an oral presentation on its most important aspects). The course must give students the opportunity to connect biological knowledge to major social issues and current events (for example, a project researching stem cells and their potential to impact the medical field). Labs must give students the opportunity to apply the seven science practices I listed earlier, and the course has to go through at least two labs that correspond with each Big Idea. Labs must make up at least 25% of class time. Students should be asked to demonstrate verbal, written, and visual communication skills with lab reports, summaries of scientific literature or evidence, and oral presentations. I was going to make a joke about teachers wasting class time by trying to get the projector to work for presentations, but then I realized that I don't even know if they use projectors anymore. I'm sure there's some other essential piece of classroom technology that never works by now. What Does an AP Biology Syllabus Look Like? The College Board has released some sample syllabi to help guide teachers in their instruction of the new format of the AP Biology course.The example that I’m looking at divides the class into nine different units of varying length. Practicing Biology (to accompany Campbell- Reece Biology), 3rd Edition, 2008, Pearson Benjamin Cummings AP Biology Investigative Labs: an Inquiry Based Approach I’ll give an overview of the topics discussed in each unit and the projects and labs students might complete throughout the year.I’ll also provide the approximate length of each unit.In this case, the class met four times a week for two 80-minute periods and two 50-minute periods (4 hours and 20 minutes a week total). Teaching Tips Writing a great syllabus is the first order of business, but as you probably know, most of teaching is in the execution. If you’re a teacher trying to provide the best experience for your AP Biology students, here are a few tips you might consider using in your lessons. #1: Provide Brief Lecture Outlines Give brief outlines to students before you start your lecture so that they’ll have a clearer picture of what you’re going to cover. I say brief outlines because you don’t want to give them notes that list everything they need to know about the lecture topic.List the main points of the lecture (around 3-5 of them), and list a couple of important subtopics under each. Provide plenty of space between concepts for students to write notes. Theyshould have some incentive to pay attention in class.This will create a better environment where studentsaren't confused or tuned out. #2: Break Up Your Lectures With Class Discussions I remember dreading double-period lecture classes in high school, and I was better than most high school studentsat sitting quietly and forgoing social interaction.You should try to engage the class in a discussion midway through your lecture to break up the monotony.I’d recommend calling on people randomly so that kids will have an incentive to pay attention and more introverted students will get a chance to participate in the discussion. #3: Be Accessible During Labs Chances are, kids will have tons of questions during labs. Tips for Students Here are a few additional tips directed towards students who want to do well in AP Biology. #1: Do the Readings on Time There’s a lot to cover in this class, so it’s critical that you keep up with the readings in your textbook.If you fall behind, it will be hard to catch up.There also may be important things that your textbook covers that your teacher won’t mention in lectures.Plus, you’ll be able to participate in class discussions and avoid failing any pop quizzes! #2: Take Notes During Lectures Don’t zone out when your teacher is talking!I know it can be difficult, but taking effective notes is a great skill to have for college and beyond.Your notes will also help you study for in-class tests and, eventually, the AP test. It’s easier to study your own notes because they’ll be written in a way that you understand. #3: Ask Questions Don’t be afraid to speak up in class discussions and engage with the lecture topics.If you feel like you don’t understand a concept, ask your teacher about it. Believe me, it's better than finding yourself totally lost later! Discussing two or three Poems in Detail, Explain how you think Heaney Develops our Understanding of the Nature of Humanity and Existence through Poetry In this essay I will discuss the poems Digging, Wheels within Wheels and Toome. I will explain how Heaney develops our understanding of humanity and existence through the poems mentioned above. Heaney mainly uses poetic techniques to express and expand our understanding of the nature of existence and humanity. The ideas in Digging concern relationships to ancestors, and to work. Heaney describes his relationship to his father and grandfather purely in terms of their work on the land. He takes the idea of digging, the commonest form of work in any rural community, and uses it as a symbol for productive, creative work in general, and for writing in particular. The idea in Wheels within Wheels are about life in the metaphor of a wheel. Toome is about the bog type land and the past. I think Heaney develops our understanding of the nature of humanity by bringing the theme of relationships on the farm into this poem. Heaney's father has great skill when it comes to digging, "levered firmly. This shows the reader that country life is not all easy, and even to work on a farm, you need to have quite a lot of skill. The images produced by these words are very effective because they give the reader a picture of a man who is not only digging, but doing it with immense skill, which is not something which we usually associate with a job like that. This helps us understand why Heaney has chosen to talk about his past and digging. The continuation of farming from Heaney's grandfather, to Heaney's father, "the old man could handle a spade. Just like his old man" shows the reader that country life is very family orientated, and professions are often carried down from father to son. The images of Heaney's father being taught to dig by his father are very powerful and effective, because they show the reader the strong bonds between humanity on a farm, and that human nature has not changed. The last line, "The squat pen rests. I'll dig with it." shows that in the country, it is often expected that people like Heaney will follow in their father's footsteps, but Heaney is seen here to choose to be a writer. The image of Heaney digging out his memories with pen are very effective because the reader can visualise the likeness between poetry and farming. Unlike travel agents, who sell holidays and a range of other travel products, tour operators actually assemble the different parts of a holiday, i. e. the type of travel, accommodation, facilities, transfers, excursions and other services.If we consider that travel agents are the retail arm of the travel business, then tour operators are the wholesalers, since they buy in bulk from the providers of travel services, such as the hoteliers and airlines, break the bulk into manageable packages and offer the finished product – the package holiday (or inclusive tour) – for sale via a travel agent or direct to the public. The package is sold for an all-inclusive price, which is generally lower than if the different parts of the holida y had been booked individually by the holidaymaker.In working with other travel and tourism industries, tour operators develop links with a wide range of organisations, including: †¢ Travel agents – using agents as a sales outlet for the tour operator’s holidays and agreeing commission payments and booking procedures; †¢ Transport providers – negotiating and agreeing contracts with airlines (charter and scheduled), rail operators, coach companies, taxi operators, etc.to supply transport services for holidaymakers; †¢ Hotels and other accommodation providers – negotiating allocations of bed spaces that form the accommodation element of the package holiday; †¢ Ancillary service providers – contracting with companies to supply representative services, transfers, ‘meet and greet’ arrangements, insurance, car hire, activities, excursions, etc.Even the large, vertically-integrated travel groups have to liaise on different functions within their own organisations, since individual parts of the group are usually separate companies in their own right, e.g. staff from Neilson Holidays, part of the Thomas Cook Group, would negotiate with staff at Thomas Cook Airlines to agree seat allocations for a season. As competition in the travel and tourism sector has intensified, tour operators have taken over or merged with other travel and tourism businesses as a way of maintaining or increasing their market share and maximising their profits. This is most noticeable in the tour operator/travel agent relationship, where: †¢ TUI Travel UK owns Thomson andFirst Choice tour operating businesses, and the Thomson travel agency chains (TUI UK is itself controlled by the German company TUI AG); †¢ Thomas Cook AG (a German group) owns a number of Thomas Cook tour operating brands/companies, plus the Thomas Cook and Going Places chains of travel agencies. These ‘big two’ travel groups were formed i n 2007 from the mergers of Thomson and First Choice Holidays, and Thomas Cook with MyTravel. They dominate the sale of package holidays in the UK, accounting for just fewer than 50 per cent of all sales.These are examples of vertical integration in the travel and tourism industry, which is when a company has control over other companies that are at different levels in the chain of distribution or in different industries. Some of the largest tour operators also own their own airlines, giving even greater control over the component parts of package holidays. As competition in the travel and tourism sector has intensified, tour operators have taken over or merged with other travel and tourism businesses.This is called vertical integration and it benefits the travel companies since they get bulk discounts and make savings by using their own companies as suppliers. However, there is concern that vertical integration of this sort may not always be in the public’s interest, since it can reduce the number of companies and give customers less choice when buying holidays. Also, customers may not know that a tour operator is owned by the travel agency that is selling their holiday.Horizontal integration is when a company owns or has control over a number of companies at the same level in the distribution chain or in the same industry. For example, many tour operating businesses that are now part of Thomas Cook and Thomson were originally independent companies, e. g. Neilson and Club 18-30 (now part of the Thomas Cook Group), and Something Special and the Holiday Cottages Group (now merged with Thomson). Large travel companies take over smaller independents as a way or reducing competition in the marketplace, but this is not always a benefit for customers who may have less choice.Trade bodies and associations are established to represent the interests of companies in a particular industry sector. ABTA – The Travel Association is the main trade body for both travel agents and tour operators in the UK. Its members are responsible for the sale of over 90 per cent of package holidays and 45 per cent of independent travel arrangements in the UK.ABTA’s role is to ensure that customers benefit from high standards of trading practice in the  travel industry and that the standards of service and business throughout its membership are of the highest calibre. All ABTA members – travel agents and tour operators – adhere to a strict code of conduct. ATOL – A United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority scheme to protect people who have purchased package holidays (Thomson, Thomas Cook, etc) and flights from a member tour operator. The majority of UK tour operators are required to hold an ATOL licence, without which they may not legally sell air travel.ATOL licensed firms will have had their business practices inspected by the CAA. An ATOL licensed tour operator must also obtain insurance bonds from the CAA. The aim of this i s to provide refunds to travellers affected by any event which causes the airline to be unable to provide travel for its customers, and to arrange for flights (in addition to accommodation and other items which may be included in a package holiday) to return home those who are still abroad at this time.
